I was completely ecstatic to find that "Hard Stuff: The Autobiography of Mayor Coleman Young" was still available in print! I've been looking for this book for YEARS, with no success!I grew up in the City of Detroit and I have ALWAYS been a fan and supporter of Mayor Coleman Young. Although I didn't agree with every decision he made for our City, he made a great deal of residents Proud to be Detroiters! This book transported me "back in time" when Detroit was kicking some Major Butt, economically, and "Uncle Coleman" (as many of us who loved this great man referred to him as) was right at the center of the City's positive economic climate of the times. Unfortunately, though, he was also at the center of controversy as well.Although "The Motor City" had its problems, under Mayor Young's leadership, (just as other Metropolitan Cities did then, and do now) Mayor Young ran the City with unapologetic flair, and a combination of confidence, street-smarts, and good old fashion POWER, that served the People (most of the time:-)...This book provides its readers with Mayor Young's back story (as told by him) which is VERY interesting. It's written in a voice that's very easy to follow, and it's quite entertaining, too! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you buy this thought-provoking and timely book. It is a HUGE eye-opener for anyone who wants to take a trick back into Detroit's Prosperous (to a degree), but "Not-So-Perfect" past, under Mayor Young's leadership. But more than that, it gives us a glimpse into "The Life and Times" of one of the most impressive, brave, caring, genuine, PROUD, knowledgeable, unflinching, controversial, effective, aloof, and complicated Political Leaders and Public Servants (Black or otherwise), in American History!I believe that Mayor Young's story has the power to transform "present-day" Detroit (and its Residents) into a major Economic Powerhouse, again...As a College Professor, I recommend "Hard Stuff" as "required reading" for undergraduate and graduate college students, majoring in Political Science, Sociology, and Urban Studies. As an Entrepreneur, I recommend this book, as a guide when considering how to negotiate deals, and how to stand up for yourself and your beliefs (and your clients/customers), when you're facing GIANT sized opponents. Moreover, and in all honesty, Mayor Young's story, "Hard Stuff" is so impactful, that it should be optioned and developed into a Major Motion Picture, as a true example of "The American Dream.""Keep On, Keeping On (Uncle Coleman)..."
